Why “link in bio” loses sales, and what to do instead

Every extra tap between interest and checkout costs you buyers. The DM-first approach puts your product one tap from the comment.

“Link in bio” has been the standard ending to a creator’s video for years. It still works — but it asks a lot of someone who was, a second ago, just watching a reel. This guide compares the two routes to a sale and shows how to move a post to the shorter one.

Count the steps

Here is what “link in bio” asks of a viewer who wants what you are selling:

  1. Stop the reel and open your profile.
  2. Find and tap the link in your bio.
  3. Find the right product on the page that opens.
  4. Go through checkout.

And here is the comment-first route:

  1. Comment your keyword.
  2. Open the DM that arrives, and tap Buy.
  3. Pay.

The comment route is shorter, but the bigger difference is who does the work. With a bio link, the viewer has to go looking. With a comment, they ask — and the product comes to them, in a conversation they started.

Why each extra step matters

Every step is a moment where something else can win their attention: the next reel, a notification, a message from a friend. You will not see those people in any report. They simply don’t arrive. Taking steps out is the most reliable way to keep more of them.

You don’t have to delete your bio link

Your profile link is still the right home for everything people browse on their own time: your shop, your YouTube, your newsletter. Comment-first selling is for the moment of a single post, when interest is highest. Most creators use both.

How to switch a post to comment-first

  • Pick one keyword that is short and hard to mistype: GUIDE, PRESET, PLAN.
  • Say it in the video and write it in the caption: “Comment GUIDE and I’ll send it to you.”
  • Pin a comment that repeats the keyword, so late viewers see it.
  • Set up the reply before posting: a short public reply under each comment and a DM with the product and a Buy button. Here is how okan does that.

What about the algorithm?

You will read that comment keywords “hack” Instagram’s algorithm. Instagram does not publish how comments affect reach, so treat those claims with care. What you can control is simpler and more useful: every person who asks gets an answer, straight away, with a way to buy.
